Brunel Engineering

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is one of Britain's greatest engineers, and easily the most famous. Unusually - although the same could be said of George Stephenson and his son - he was as good a mechanical engineer as he was civil engineer. His palmarès includes railways, bridges, tunnels, engines and ships. He is probably most famous for the Great Western Railway and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. In our opinion, his SS Great Britain - above - is an even more impressive a technical achievement. Your quest is to visit 17 of Brunel's surviving works to earn the title Brunel Devotee. There is an intermediate title of Brunel Fan for visiting 8.

Don't bother visiting the Brunel Railway Sheds (below) in High Wycombe for the time being. When we passed in October 2020, it was looking very sorry for itself. It does have a Grade II listing, so they will hopefully renovate it reasonably seen.
